Cut the Cards
Grace Keslar walked out of the bank and stopped on the sidewalk. Looking forward without seeing, she tried to process all the information the bank and her accountant, David Fielding, had just shared with her.
âMrs. K!â Verdi waved his hand wildly over his head as he stood on one foot with the driverâs door open on the car. He was only one parking space away, but Grace seemed not to see him.
Grace nodded at Verdi and walked toward the car as David rushed out of the double doors of the bank. Sliding into the back seat, David caught the door before she closed it. âIâm going back to my office. Call me once you get settled in at home later and we will sort out the details. Thereâs no rush, but donât worry. Okay?â
Grace nodded solemnly and reached for the door handle. She wasnât interested in conversation and just wanted Verdi to drive. âLetâs go back to the spa and check on Stanley. Iâm sure heâs ready to go now.â
Verdi glanced in the rear-view mirror as he pulled away from the curb. David still stood on the sidewalk, running his hand through his hair. âEverything okay, Mrs. K?â It was a silly question. It was obvious that something was troubling her.
âYes, Iâm afraid Iâve been away longer than I planned, but I got caught up in chatter at the craft shop. I do enjoy visiting with those ladies.â
Verdi smiled and nodded into the mirror, but noticed the smile was forced. âIâm sure Stanley found a way to pass the time. Maybe heâs doing a little exercise. I told him just last week that he was going to get soft watching me put out the new mulch instead of helping.â Verdi glanced at the mirror again but saw no recognition from Grace. It was as if she did not hear a word he said.
âVerdi, has the young man, Nicholas Grimshaw, been riding with you to the spa in the mornings?â
âNo, maâam. He leaves out early though. He may be driving himself.â
âHe seems very quiet. I donât feel like I know this group very well. Itâs difficult being gone during the day. I havenât had the opportunity to chat much with them.â
âWell, the girls have been out to the spa, but theyâve all got other things going on, too. Shopping, and such. I havenât talked to the young man, but he is away from the house most of the day.â
âThey seem like a very nice group. I hope to spend some time with them this evening.â
Verdi pulled into the spa parking lot and stopped the car in front of the main entrance. âYou can get out here if you like and then Iâll go find a place to park. Iâll come in and see if Stanley is ready to go back to the house.â
Grace whipped her head around and turned in her seat as a car drove by and pulled out onto the highway. âDid you see that man?â
Verdi looked through the back window.
